A Raindrop in the Cloud

I’ve enjoyed writing poems all my life.  These days I am able to put them to music, which I love doing.

This poem expresses my thoughts about my software development career.  I haven’t given up yet, I keep up, but I am “real” about it.

 A Raindrop in the Cloud

I want to write a program
I’ve done it for 40 years
I can make a computer do anything
But with power comes some fears

I wrote the code for business,
We automated all the forms,
Lots of smart jobs now are dumb jobs,
This tech changed all the norms

We went from text to IDEs,
Frameworks, tests, oh joy!
Faster, smarter, check it in,
It’s working – let’s deploy!

AI makes it better,
I can make code like a team,
I can make that code high quality
I can make anything I dream.

But there’s the problem don’t you see?
Is your true North truly true?
So many developers are out there,
Just as talented as you.

They can use AI and the IDEs,
They can vibe code up a storm,
The stakes are higher now my friends,
Our tech changed all the norms

I am having trouble dreaming now,
Endless products stream so loud,
Is there an original idea still in me?
Or am I just raindrop in the cloud?
